Happy New Year 2021
Really, what a year it has been… 🎢🦠😅 But here we all are!
As we close off this chapter & start a new one — remember to be grateful for everything you have, all you have learned & how much you have grown as a person this year! As we wrap up 2020 & begin to set our intentions & goals for 2021, it is important to celebrate what we have accomplished over the past 12 months.
I have always struggled with this...
I typically see accomplishments as just another step in the ladder on my way to where I am going- not as something to celebrate.
For years, my coaches have tried to get me to celebrate wins, acknowledge the triumphs, & be more proud of myself.
So- over the next few days- I am going to REFLECT on the past year & really celebrate (appreciate) all that has happened- the stuff that worked, the stuff that didn't, & everything in between.
Here are some tips to help you do even better in 2021 than you did in 2020:
➡️Step 1: Realise where you stand in the things that matter most to you —
Ikigai is a great tool to help you make some of these insights!
➡️Step 2: Recall and reflect on as much as you can about 2020 —
Analyse all your ups & downs in detail. This will help you with self-awareness, gratitude & critical thinking!
➡️Step 3: Start reflecting about 2021 —
Ask yourself “why” you are doing what you’re doing. See how you can best maximise things or make any new improvements!
➡️Step 4: Create a plan for 2021 —
Nothing is ever set in stone, but having a vision, a plan, & sense of direction is a crucial motivating factor in helping you take action!
➡️Step 5: Let go of the past & welcome change!
The question is, are you dedicated to the path of life you are currently following? It is never too late to commit to something new. Make 2021 a turning point year! Remember, when the going gets tough, don't cheat yourself out of the possibilities. Instead, commit to the action or direction you desire to go & see where it takes you.
So, HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🥳 Wishing you guys all the love, happiness & success that you deserve! 🙏🤗🤩🍾🌈💫

Have you done something to recharge yourself today? 💦🧘🏻♂️🛌❤️ Write YES/NO in the comments! 👇
Everyday we recharge our phones;📱but we forget to recharge ourselves!🔋
After all the busy meetings in your day, the traffic, the commuting, the interactions you have with various people — do you even register when your body and your mind only have around 20% charge left? 🤯
⬇️Here are the best ways to recharge: 🔝
🔋Exercising 🏋️♂️
This creates serotonin and sends messages of happiness & wellbeing to your nervous system.
🔋Meditating 🧘🏻♂️
What gym does for the body, meditation does for the mind! This is basically your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual downtime. It impacts your nervous system by reducing stress-related chemicals in the body.
🔋Having Deep & Meaningful Relationships 💕
Joyful, fulfilling interactions with depth with the right people can give you a massive recharge!
🔋A Winning Evening Routine ✨
Around 35% of people are not getting 7 hours of sleep per night. Each body and mind is different — so find what works for you and stick to it, cheers!

Invest in Your Mind...
Most people spend their lives saving, spending & worrying about money — so much, in fact, that they say they “don’t have time” to learn new things!
However, some of the world’s smartest & busiest people — like Elon Musk, Warren Buffet & Bill Gates — set aside at least 1 hour a day on intentional learning. They see what others don’t: That learning is the single best investment of our time that we can make. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” 💡
When you understand the value of knowledge, in this world where technology is rendering previously expensive products or services much cheaper (even free), it’s just a matter of getting more of it. Dedicate yourself to constant learning! 📚
What’s more, thanks to these technological advances — the learner is in the driver’s seat! 🏎 Knowledge can now be gained by anyone with the passion to pursue it & the commitment to stick with it.
Knowledge may be the new money but, unlike money, you don’t lose it when you use knowledge or give it away! 💫
Transferring knowledge anywhere in the world is free & instant. It’s fun to acquire & it makes your brain work better. It helps you think bigger & beyond your circumstances. It puts your life in perspective by essentially helping you live many lives in one life through other people’s experiences & wisdom! 💥
.
.
💜 Be great, cheers!

Opportunity lies in Adversity..
Leave a 💯 in the comments if you agree! 👇
“I never lose. I either win or learn.” ~ Nelson Mandela 🔥
What if I told you that your most challenging moments in life were actually your greatest opportunities to learn & grow as a person? 🥵🌱And what if I said that these hard times of #pain & #adversity in fact held the greatest potential to transform your life for the better, & to bring you closer to your dreams and ambitions? 💫🔝
When negative moments come up, the feelings of pain, sadness or anger can contaminate the way we feel about everything in our lives. 🌩 These emotions are 100% natural as human, & it’s unavoidable (necessary too) for us to all experience unhappy moments in our lives. But that doesn’t mean we have to dwell on our sadness! In fact, we should be grateful for these “terrible” moments, because they provide us with clarity. 💯
Your life is a journey, every single day you have the opportunity to learn & improve yourself on the road to achieving your goals. 🙌 That’s the power within each & every one of us! But if you allow those hard times to alter your course, you’ll never reach your full potential. 💥
Here are some steps to developing a constructive mindset to help you confront moments of adversity with a more positive outlook;
✔️Analyze. 🔍 What caused it? How were you feeling? What could/couldn’t you control? Harness the power of self-awareness & self-analysis.
✔️Acknowledge & accept. 🙏
✔️Alter your attitude & thoughts. 🧠 What did you learn from it? Be energised from that!
✔️Reinforce. 🔁 Constantly reinforce what you’ve learned & how far your mind has come, continue improving & growing every day. You’ll soon fall in love with the process of becoming the best version of yourself, cheers!

Release Anxiety...
Remember the last time you had anxiety. What was the nature of your thoughts? Was it simply recognizing various possibilities and accepting that those could happen? Or were you looking at various worst case scenarios thinking to yourself, “Those cannot happen. If they happen I will not be okay. I must stop those things from happening.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Often, needing to know exactly what is going to happen or attaching to a specific outcome is the very thing that brings about anxiety. Sometimes you may have the false idea that thinking about it is somehow going to change the outcome.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I encourage you to release, let go and surrender to what will happen in the future. Some parts of it will be in your control and some of it won’t.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you are yearning for a sense of greater control, try to cope ahead for how to effectively handle challenges instead of just spinning in worst case scenarios, feeling helpless and scared. What is in your control is how you respond, so you can prepare yourself to act effectively, and then let go.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Surrender and ground yourself with the knowledge that you are strong enough to make it through whatever comes your way, cheers!

Power of Subconscious mind...
➡️Your subconscious mind is a powerful secondary system that pretty much runs everything in your life! 💫
Learning how to stimulate the communication between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind is an effective tool to achieve success, happiness, and wealth! 🏆💸
The subconscious mind is a kind of data-bank for everything that is not in your conscious mind. It stores your beliefs, your experiences, your long-term memories, and your skills! Practically everything that you have ever seen, done, or thought is in there! ⏳👁💡
It also acts as your guidance system.🕯It constantly monitors the information it receives from your senses for dangers and opportunities; and then communicates that information to your conscious mind! Crazy, right?
👇Here are some ways you can start training your subconscious mind to get what you want 💥;
🧠Be willing to see the unchangeable change 👁🗨
🧠Give yourself permission to be successful 💪
🧠Don’t allow other people’s fears to fill you with doubt 🙉
🧠Surround yourself with positive reinforcement 🔝
🧠Speak of your success as a present fact, not a future plan 🤸♂️
🧠Create a vision space 🖼
🧠Identify your resistance 👆
🧠Have a master plan for your life 🗓
🧠Start a gratitude journal 🙏
🧠Begin asking for exactly what you want 🗣
🧠Become less attached to the “how” 🙃
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

💜 Always be great, Cheers!

Obstacle Makes You Stronger
It takes tremendous courage to step outside of your comfort zone and do things that are a bit scary, with the intention of living according to your values.
Deciding to make changes in your life that move you towards what really matters to you is so brave!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While that process can be really exciting and feel really positive when you get support from the people around you, you may also find that not everyone
will be on board. Not everyone will agree or support what you’re doing, and that is okay. And while this certainly can feel disappointing, don’t allow for this to demotivate you from continuing to move forward.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We all have our own unique ideas, motives, and beliefs. Please remember, just because someone doesn't believe in what you’re doing, doesn’t mean that what
you’re doing is wrong or without value. Learning how to tolerate other people’s opinions and things not going as planned can be an important part of your journey.
Each time you face these obstacles, you grow stronger...
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

❤️ Always be great, Cheers!

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO BE PRESENT...
Train your Brain to be Present..
Journey through within!
To be fully present, aware of yourself and your surroundings, while accepting the moment, and participating in life, are keys to living a mindful lifestyle.
Mindfulness is a practice that helps you to learn how to be right here, right now, in this present moment. After all, this is where your life actually happens!
Life has already happened in the past and has yet to happen in the future. Mindfulness helps us to live in the now.
Yesterday I explained the What Skills in Mindfulness, and how they can help you to train your brain to be present and in the moment.
Here are 3 ways you can practice the What Skills in Mindfulness:
1.Observe your breathing, notice how your chest expands as you inhale and belly contracts as you exhale. Notice how the breath feels as it enters your nose and how it feels as you exhale through your nose.
2. Observe and describe: Lay outside observing what you see above you. Notice the patterns of the clouds that pass by or the birds or even trees. See if you can
describe what you notice using factual/nonjudgmental language.
3. Enjoy, Sing, Dance to music and really throw yourself into it. Really feel the music and move your body without self-consciousness.
Mindfulness practice is meant to bring you into the present moment and help you to become aware of your internal and external experiences, while giving you the ability to engage and participate in the present moment.
How will you choose to practice mindfulness today?
Stay positive, FiGHTERs — I love you all! 🤗❤️💫⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Your Negativity is Killing Your Success..
Journey through within!

·
Guys, negativity is killing your chances of success! ⛈🗡

Did you know that 80% of self-talk is negative? 😮 Everything from school, your business, relationships, and your favourite hobbies can all be affected
by the negativity that you allow to brew within yourself!

Getting rid of this negative self-talk is often the only thing holding you back from achieving the success and happiness that you want in life!

YOU DESERVE THE CREDIT..
You Deserve The Credit..
Journey through within!
We all encounter healing people in our lives, whether they are friends, family, or people we hire like therapists,
doctors, or spiritual guides. If you experience healing within their presence or through their guidance, please know
that it is not them who has healed you. It is you who healed you; they just acted as a guide creating a path to guide
you in the direction of your healing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sometimes being in the presence of someone who understands you on a deep level and understands the healing process can
help you to feel that there is safe space for healing. However, know that YOU were the courageous one, YOU were the brave
one who gave yourself permission to enter that space of healing, and it's YOU deserve the credit. Own your own healing...❤

You Have The Power to Change..
I remember coaching a group of teachers online a few months ago, and over half of them admitted that for a lot of their life they had tried to live upto the expectations of one or both of their parents. 😯
Consequently they have never felt good enough and their confidence has suffered. 😑
When we try and live upto the expectations of others, we can lose the essence of who we really are. We feel pressurised, uncomfortable and lack the clarity in making decisions. 😐
Letting go of the need to please others and live upto their expectations can liberate us from so much pain and pressure.
Throughout my life I have adapted, changed or learnt what I need to. Life is not about being perfect, it is about learning, adapting and growing.
If you don't know something and want to learn, just ask, growth is empowering. Reach out if you need help being more comfortable in your own skin ✅

Trust Nature to Balance Your Life...
Wednesday, 2 September 2020
Life is all about finding balance in Acceptance & Change..
Being effective in life is all about learning how to navigate the dialectics of acceptance and change. Sometimes life calls on us to practice more acceptance, where we may need to take a pause and accept our reality and our situation instead of staying so firmly fixed on the way things should be or how unfair they're.
Other time we need to focus on changing our behaviour, our thinking, our patterns and you may find that different times call for the scale to be tipped to one side more than the other. The idea is to learn how to maintain some balance between those shifts. Allowing those shifts to happen in a way that is going to enhance your life and move it in the direction of your values.
That is also where mindful practice can be really helpful! These practice give you a center place to come back to, a central point that grounds you into the moment and guides you as you navigate between options.
I encourage you to spend 5 minutes on a mindful practice that can help you to come back and center ground yourself. Step outside, take deep breaths, go for a walk, look up at the sky, play with your kids whatever helps you slow down and take in the present moment..❤
.
.
Be great #FiGHTERs, cheers!

Are You Someone Who is seeing things All-or-Nothing Ways???
• Are you someone who tends to see thing in all-or-nothing ways? • And if so, how is that working for you?
• Does it cause any troubles in your life?
Often I find that people can get stuck in extreme ways of thinking, calling things good or bad, right or wrong, or even seeing things as all or nothing. Although this way of thinking may seem to make life more easy & simplified and perhaps lead you to feel more comfortable, it really limit possibilities and option. It can keep you from shifting your perspective to see other's points of view.
All-or-nothing thinking can also lead to more intense emotions & problematic issues with coping.
What I encourage to do is to try to stretch yourself a li'l bit outside of your own perspective. See if you can find other possibilities to what you think or believe. If you're with someone else, see if you can shift & see things in their perspective.
As you begin to open up & shift your focus, your life tends to become richer, fuller; allowing you to see all the colours and possibilities that surround you...

Shift Your Mind out of Auto-pilot mode...
Do you find yourself operating on autopilot most of the time..
If you find that your life is happening largely by habits or autopilot and not by intentions, it may be interfering with your overall fulfilment. You may also feel like life is passing you by!
The good news is that you can shift out of your autopilot mode and begin to feel greater fulfilment. Start by taking your time to set intentions for the things you choose to do, for those intentions to be impactful they need to be aligned with your value system. If I'm going for lunch with my son, I can set my intention to be present with him fully by putting down my phone during that time.
If you move into activities in your life with intention, it can profoundly start to change how you experience those things! Even regular activities like taking a shower, going for a walk, a work meeting, having dinner, when done with intention, can be meaningful, more enjoyable and lead to a feeling of greater life fulfilment.
So for today, see what you can do to set intentions that are aligned with your values regarding your daily life. Does anything shift? Did you walk out of your experiences more balanced & less stressful? I suspect that you'll

Life above Limitations...
Our body postures can have profound impact on our sense of confidence, changing your physiology & acting opposite of sadness, shame, anxiety and insecurities can help your body and brain feel more confident.
Actually research shows that 'power poses' like Superman pose, can help create a chemical change in your body that helps you feel much more confidence. Standing tall, hands on hips, shoulders broad, looking forward and wearing a soft smile on your face.
I like to do this power poses on my everyday life, like doing yoga, as you can see in the picture! This helps me feel more confident, like I can take on the world!
Try it out, they are easy and effective ways to create a shift, see what kind of poses can empower you...
Have kids? Get them to join you, when kids join you, and they create any pose, its in your hand to create an ambience for them to feel empowered, create a balance, self-confidence at an early age. Plus, their natural playfulness brings in a little laughter, too!

Acceptance...
Tuning to Your Intuition...
Saturday, 8 August 2020
Your Body and Mind require kindness...
• Do you criticise your body & treat it as an object that needs to be fixed?
• Do you treat some emotions as good & othere are as bad?
• Do you tend to hold yourself with harshness and judgment when you commit any mistakes or when you encounter challenges?
If you're constantly treating your body, mind, emotions like they're problems that needs fixing or even your enemy, the quality of your life is not good of what is actually could be, if you start establishing to befriend your mind and body!
To live optimally it's needed to make peace with your mind and body, and give them respect and kindness that they deserve.
So, how to handle this?
🔹️the first step: treat yourself like you would want a good friend to treat you, this means talking yourself with kindness, holding yourself with compassion and honouring what your body, mind, emotions are telling you. Take your internal experience with love and compassion! To take life to the next level, throw in some gratitude for your body and mind and all they do for you, every single day...

A Letter To 2005 Version of Self
#Number1
If I could write a letter to the 2005 version of myself, what would it say?
Let’s pretend that you are living in the future and have been handed the opportunity to write a letter to the 2005 version of yourself. I’m not going to offer you any further direction as I feel this exercise will be more powerful if I don’t lead you one way or another, but just in case you’re curious, here’s what I would say to the 2005 (20 years old) version of myself:
Dear Just crossed Teenage Ushas,
You’re feeling a bit nervous right now, but take a deep breath and do the scary thing, because it’ll be worth it. I know the idea of getting on a stage and performing a music concert in front of everybody makes you feel like fainting, but you’re going to walk away more confident and comfortable in who you are.
Also, congrats on that 30 pounds you lost gaining to avoid so much of physical exercises, but a word of warning: you’re going to go to office where there is a buffet of addictions available 24/7, which is known to eat away your feelings, and gain every bit of that even more. To save yourself a lot of trouble, I would recommend writing about what you’re dealing with so you can cope with things in a positive way. But hey, even if you don’t, it’s okay, because later you’re going to discover that lifting weights is awesome, to get super strong/built, so no big deal.
Never stop dreaming big, no matter what other people say and think. Yes, listen to feedback from others, but don’t get caught up in any negative opinions that aren’t accompanied with positive input; because without that, it’s a waste of your time.
Oh, I almost forgot… In a couple years, someone is going to offer you your first shot of tequila at a office party. Just because you feel “okay” after that first shot does not mean you should immediately drink four more. I know you’re still young-and-innocent, but just trust me on this one, it’s a very bad idea. In future you might have a wrong conception about your intake alcoholic consumtion. A full of joyride is waiting for you, where you are sure to fall behind! Welcome to the Hell, to survive...
❤ Be great FiGHTER, cheers!
-Ushas from the Future
If you’re feeling brave, tell us what your letter would say in the comments!

Mindfulness at Everything..
Here is a way you can start your day off winning 💪
To decrease stress levels, do not grab your phone and start scrolling when you first awake in the morning.
Spend the first 1-2 hours focused on being present wherever you are.
The phone provides & sets a tone for being easily distracted. This puts your mind into a scattered state first thing & you are trying to comprehend multiple things at once.
This causes information overload before your day begins to take on full activities. Your ability to make sound decisions or to see opportunities decrease dramatically.
Take one thing at a time in the morning. Start with gratitude. Notice your face in the mirror. Feel the smooth texture of your water. Do some stretching & feel your body moving.
The key is to notice you first. This will allow you to center yourself in the midst of distractions throughout your day. You will find greater opportunities & solutions to problems this way, cheers! 🙏🏼

Shift Attention ...
Dear #FiGHTERs,
When things get complicated, people tend to tune out. If you are looking to capture and hold the attention of an audience, complexity is not the way to go. Great leaders aim to simplify.
I’ve been thinking about this era of change that we have moved into.
What is something else that this 2020 year can be referred to? (Don't count negatives)
I believe it to be also an era of courage, an era of shift attention!
The courage to create our own effective changes despite the pressures & stresses of our environments, cheers!
Would you agree?

The Importance of Gurus/Teachers in our life...
Guru Purnima has been celebrated and cherished for thousands of years in the Indian tradition. Let’s explore a few stories of Guru Purnima, from the first moment when the first Guru or Adi Guru began transmitting the science of yoga to the Saptarishis or seven sages, to Gautama the Buddha’s prescription to his monks, to the seasonal journeys of sadhakas during this time.
It is said that, the Guru Vyasa wrote all the 4 Vedas that were recited by the Lord Brahma and every person in this world is in debt for the work, that saint Vyasa did. He also wrote several Purans. And from those times, a day was dedicated towards the Gurus and this day is called as ‘Guru Purnima’. Purnima word is used because on this day, there is a full moon. It has a deep significance in the past and in today’s world also. As this day is dedicated towards the Gurus, people irrespective of caste etc offer their prayers to their gurus thanking them for the knowledge they have provided to the learner.
The day is for Guru (Teachers in most common language), so let’s also read the importance of Teachers in our Life:
In literal meaning, Guru is a Sanskrit term that connotes someone who is a “teacher, guide or master” of certain knowledge.
Teachers are an extremely important facet of any society for a number of reasons and their role in society is both significant and valuable.
Teachers are the people who educate the youth of society who in turn become the leaders of the next generation of people.
Teachers are the people who are teaching children and imparting knowledge upon them in their most impressionable years.
What children learn from their teachers at a young age will most likely stay with them in some facet for the rest of their lives. I bow down with gratitude to my all the Gurus, relentlessly!
Role of me (©Ushas) explaining, is to ensure the Reach of Teachers should be there in life of every individual, cheers!

Intentions can be powerful...
I believe intentions are important. When you start with intention you tell yourself and the universe what direction you want to go in. We can’t always control the outcome or decide how things go but we can always do our best and ask for support along the way.
“It is more important to be of pure intention than of perfect action.”
― Ilyas Kassam
Intentions are different from goals for me, they’re more a direction and feeling than a fixed place I want to go, cheers!
anyone wish to discuss?

A Teacher During Lockdown...
From the commute or school run, to lunch breaks and ‘home time’ or the gym, our days are normally governed by routine.
But in lockdown, everything’s changed, and rather than relying on train timetables or school bells to keep our routine in check, we are left to our own devices. And it can be easy to let things slip.
Golden opportunity to do business in education industry during lockdown period. No need to fear Corona, work and earn from the comforts of your own home. But there is a chance! As we are certainly living in interesting times with COVID 19 shaking up 2020. If you are suddenly required to teach online here are some tips and strategies to make it a little easier. With students suddenly being required to learn from home it is important to remember that we are not requiring parent to be teachers. You are the educational expert and while parents may play a role in encouraging their child to take part in online lessons and to do the work you have set, it is not the parents role to suddenly understand physics or be the physical education teacher. The pressure of achievement and handing work in needs to be eased and a focus on ensuring you are giving meaningful work is important. If they do it – great. If they don’t that should be fine too. Many families are navigating huge emotions of having lost their jobs or doing their job from home, whilst parenting, home schooling, wondering how to get groceries and still doing the laundry and cooking healthy meals.
#TheChallenges:-
i) The biggest challenge for many students will be the multitude of distractions they have at home. Social media, Netflix, TV, online games, YouTube, TicToc, cat videos and so on. In fact, these may also be big distractions for you suddenly working from home too!
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of working with Sugata Mitra, best known for his “Hole in the Wall” experiment and TED talks. He has a wonderful quote which I have never forgotten.
"Every classroom should have a Play Station or an X-Box in the corner and teachers need to be better than that! " - Sugata Mitra
This is possibly more relevant in todays time as ever before. The essence of his quote is that we as teachers need to be providing education that is meaningful, purposeful and creates the challenge to level up and progress in small bite size pieces – ultimately using gamification strategies. See more about this here. The bottom line is our lessons need to be more exciting than the technology they have access to.
ii) The second challenge often talked about in online learning is attention span. I have heard the statistics about how children and adults have the attention span of a goldfish. I’m not sure if this is really true as I watch children totally focused for hours on their online games, playing sport, reading a book or singing to their favourite music. I do not believe it is a challenge with attention span, I think it is about engagement.
The neuroscience is clear that the brain copes better with shorter sessions more often rather than long learning times. Dr John Medina in his celebrated 12 Brain Rules book suggests taking small brain breaks often. Great junior school teachers know this. When they see students fidgeting, chatting or moving more than they usually do they may ask them to stand up and turn around 3 times and sit down. This is known as a mini brain break. Teaching online will be the same. If you are providing videos for students to watch, make then 1-3 minutes long. If you are teaching online classes, keep them to the point, and if needed ask students to stand up and take a 30 second stretch and wiggle break.
Older students who are working from home in a self-directed or study mode, may find the app 'iStudyAlarm' useful. This is a free app timer which times their learning sessions for 20 minutes and then gives them a 3 minute revision time and times their 5 minute break. I find most teenage students can focus for 20 minutes and enjoy the shorter sessions.
#Structure:-
Online lessons will be typically shorter than face to face classroom lessons. This is often because you are not needing to do as much classroom management, handing out books, waiting for students to get ready or packing up.
If you have daily routines in your lessons, stick to those as much as possible. Routines create calm and can maintain order. The brain loves certainty, and this can reduce stress and anxiety.
A great lesson, whether face to face or online has a beginning, middle and end. This is probably more important online. At the beginning, tell them what they are going to learn, hook them with a provocation, story or engage with novelty. The middle of the lesson is where you teach the key points of your content, practice using the skills or knowledge and show exemplars and examples. At the end; summarise, check students understanding, answer questions and give their next steps.
Checking understanding and learning can be as simple as asking students to write the 3 main points on a piece of paper and then they show you on the video screen. Maybe you ask questions to check understanding, perhaps you create a poll or a quiz. There are many options online.
Give students a reason to need your content:
Create an over arching task, project or work plan which involves you ‘feeding’ information to your learners so they can successfully complete the task. This may be an assignment or home tasks that needs to be completed or a genius hour, passion project which students will work on at home.
#MaintainingRelationships:
If you are teaching in the morning, use your afternoons to schedule weekly one on one 15 minute meetings with your students to ‘check in.’ Firstly, check in on how they are doing personally. Being in lockdown with their parents and siblings, and away from their peer group may be a challenge for many. Remember you are a key link to their ‘outside world.’ They know and trust you. Secondly, discuss how their learning is going. Answer their questions, give them some positive reinforcement and ask what they think their next learning steps are. Ensure you are the voice of calm and hope.
Run mini workshops:
Once you have spoken to your students, you will start getting a bigger picture of what their next learning steps are. Schedule and host online workshops that students can log into. For example, how to summarise readings from a book, fractions, demonstrating an art technique, a particular social studies lesson, graphing hints and tips, etc. The possibilities are endless. Remember to invite students to join and not to make it compulsory.
Make the learning visual:
Did you know the average adult human brain has about 100 billion cells! Neuroscience tells us that eleven million of these are sensory neurons, which are designed to bring in information to your brain through your senses. A staggering ten million of these are for your eyes! From your five senses the brain picks up more from your eyes than all your other senses combined. This has big implications for how we teach, on and off line. Visual stimulus is extremely important. This includes the use of colour, video and images. (It is one of the key reasons Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube are so popular with youth.)
If you are presenting online, please avoid the ‘death by power point’ slides that so many of us have witnessed. Small print and masses of writing is certainly going to switch most young minds off. Instead use strong visual pictures, key words, large font (50+ of more) and make your slides colourful.
Be aware of your voice:
Teaching online is sometimes like a theatre production. Your voice is what will be transmitted through the internet or videos. Use expressive tones, vary your pace (speed) and differ your volume with a whisper, singing and telling stories. If you have a loud booming voice, soften and slow down online. If you have a high pitch voice, lower your tone. Talk in a conversational way rather than an instructional lecture tone. If you find it is harder to do this when you cannot see your students, place a photo of a person or group of students just beyond your camera lens and talk to that.
Keep students active:
This quote from Dr. Rich Allen says it all. ‘If the bum is numb, the brain is the same.’ Keep your students active rather than having them sit in front of a screen for long periods of time. If in your classroom you use brain breaks, do this online. Hold a dance party, just kidding! Give students a task and let them do it. Avoid long lengthy explanations. If required have the instructions pre written for students to refer to.
Stand up:
Stand up when you present online or offline as this will allow you to have more energy, easier access to your props and allow for more expressive hand gestures. All important when students do not get the full body experience of being in a classroom.
Last of all, remember you do not have to be an expert at this. Things go wrong, videos don’t play. Internet connectivity is often unstable. You will make bloopers. Students will know this is all new and challenging for you. Be a role model for learning. Laugh at yourself and… persist, have fun, be creative, learn, grow and stretch yourself. At a time when the outside world can appear quite daunting, and there is so much uncertainty around, these rituals can keep us feeling secure and with a sense of normalcy...
Cheers!
